(Spier) Signature Pinotage

With its dark and juicy fruit and silky tannins, this easygoing and unpretentious red is excellent company no matter the night of the week. Although it plays nice with most red meats (sweet and sticky pulled pork anyone?!) we love it with bobotie and other Cape Malay-style curries. Room to spare? Enjoy a glass with roasted marshmallows too!

TASTING NOTE
Beautiful perfumed notes of black cherry, forest berries and subtle allspice lead to a smooth, rounded mid-palate with balanced acidity and a lingering, fruity aftertaste.

SERVE WITH
Grilled lamb chops or burgers with caramelised onions, mushroom risotto or mildly spiced vegetable curry.

ORIGIN: Western Cape

TERROIR
Soil: Clovelly, Hutton and Estcourt. Temperature: winter ±9° - ±18°C; summer ±14° - 26°C Annual rainfall: ±650 – ±750mm Proximity to ocean: 40 – 80km

VINEYARD AND CLIMATE CONDITIONS
The 20 - 22-year-old vertical trellised vines receive supplementary irrigation where the clay subsoils are too structured and porous, to ensure optimal foliage and even ripening. These vineyards are planted up to 80 km from the coast, with geographical influence from mountains and the cold Atlantic coast.

WINEMAKING
Grapes were harvested at ±24°B, gently crushed and de-stemmed to stainless-steel tanks. The use of cultured and natural yeast helps to unlock the fragrant fruit profile of the grapes. After fermentation, 20% of the wine was matured in French oak barrels for 8 to 10 months; the remainder matured in stainless steel tanks with French-oak staves.
